Local community member Linda Mabanga is making his mark after being selected as a finalist in the Mr Mpumalanga competition — a journey he describes as a bold leap of faith and a personal victory over self-doubt.

Mabanga admits that entering the competition was something he had always wanted to do but never had the courage to attempt. That changed when he saw the application online and decided to apply without overthinking it. Despite having no formal modelling background or paid professional experience, he progressed straight through to the Mpumalanga finals.

“I just told myself I have nothing to lose. If I don’t try, I’ll never know,” he said.

Although he has previously volunteered as a model for amateur photographers, Mabanga says this competition marks his first official professional platform. He credits his success to confidence, self-belief and the willingness to step outside his comfort zone.

“This competition is about pushing myself. I’m fighting my demons — my shyness, my fear of being out there. It forces me to communicate, to engage with people and to grow.”

Advocating for Mental Health and Education

Beyond the stage, Mabanga is passionate about community development, mental health awareness and education. His advocacy focuses on supporting young people, particularly learners who struggle with emotional challenges and lack access to counselling services.

He believes mental health is just as important as academic success.

“Learners perform better when they are emotionally supported. In many township schools, children go through a lot and have no safe space to talk. We need counsellors, psychologists and care groups in schools.”

He is currently involved in community outreach through the ML Omega Force, where he serves as a strength coach. He also holds a diploma in Officiating and Coaching Science.

As part of the Mr Mpumalanga competition, all finalists have been tasked with running a community campaign. Mabanga is leading a back-to-school dignity drive for young boys, collecting toiletry items such as toothpaste, lotion and deodorant to create dignity packs for learners in need.

Looking Ahead

If crowned Mr Mpumalanga, Mabanga hopes to use the platform to empower young men across the province.

“My mission is to help learners who feel forgotten. I want them to be comfortable in their own skin, believe in themselves and take their mental health seriously.”

He encourages anyone who dreams of following a similar path to take the leap.

“Go for it. You’ve got nothing to lose.”
