Two Chinese nationals appeared before the Middelburg Serious Commercial Crime Court on Wednesday, 20 August 2025, following their arrest in connection with the sale of counterfeit liquor in Ermelo. The case stems from a March 2023 investigation by the Hawks’ Middelburg-based Serious Commercial Crime Investigation Unit, which uncovered fake alcohol worth an estimated R600,000 being sold at a local liquor store.

The accused, 30-year-old Julian Yan and 55-year-old Muhe Lin, were unable to produce proof of purchase or valid import documentation for the alcohol in question. Both were charged with three counts under the Customs and Excise Act.

During the court proceedings, the charges against Muhe Lin were withdrawn. His co-accused, Julian Yan, was convicted and sentenced to three years’ imprisonment. She was given the option to pay a R100,000 fine, and half of her sentence was suspended for three years on the condition that she does not commit a similar offense during that period.

Authorities have warned that counterfeit liquor poses a serious public health risk. Major General Nico Gerber, Provincial Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, urged community members to remain alert. “The Hawks will always act on information provided by the public. It is our duty to serve and protect,” he stated.

Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious alcohol sales to the authorities. For tips or information, contact Lieutenant Colonel Magonseni Nkosi at 071 481 3437.
