South Africa is facing an unprecedented weather emergency as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issues a rare Red Level 10 warning for disruptive rainfall in parts of Limpopo and Mpumalanga — the highest alert level on record. In recent years, weather alerts across the two provinces have typically ranged between Level 2 and, at most, Level 4 thunderstorms. However, SAWS has now warned that the current system is expected to bring extreme and potentially catastrophic rainfall, marking an all-time high in severity.

Parts of Limpopo are already experiencing severe weather conditions, with flooding reported in several low-lying areas, and fatalities have already been recorded. According to weather reports, more than 400mm of rain has already fallen in parts of Limpopo and Mpumalanga, with some regions recording over 500mm. The heavy rainfall is expected to continue through the weekend and only begin clearing by Monday, with a further 150mm likely in some areas and more than 300mm still possible in the most severely affected regions. The situation has prompted urgent government intervention.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has visited the flood-stricken parts of Limpopo as of today Thursday, January, 15 2026, to assess the extent of the damage and evaluate the government’s emergency response. The Presidency confirmed that the visit aims to ensure that affected communities receive immediate relief and support.

SAWS has warned that the ongoing rainfall, driven by tropical moisture over the eastern regions, could result in widespread flooding, damage to property and infrastructure, disruptions to transport routes, and interruptions to essential services such as water and electricity.

It is important to note that in the past there have been instances where weather forecasts did not unfold as predicted — whether in impact, reach, or severe conditions being materialised at all. Residents are therefore urged not to panic, but to remain calm and continue following official updates from SAWS.
iNews will continue to provide verified updates as the situation develops.

Weather Safety Tips for Residents in Affected Areas

Residents are urged to take the following precautions if severe weather conditions develop in their area:

  • Avoid crossing flooded roads, bridges and rivers, even if the water appears shallow.

  • Stay away from low-lying areas and move to higher ground if flooding threatens your home.

  • Do not attempt to drive through flowing water, as vehicles can be swept away easily.

  • Keep emergency numbers on hand and ensure mobile devices are fully charged.

  • Follow official updates from SAWS, local authorities and disaster management teams.

  • Secure loose items around your home and switch off electricity if flooding enters your property.

Authorities urge communities to remain vigilant and to prioritise safety as severe weather conditions continue.
