The Okpugo twins have returned home from the prestigious Karate 1 Youth League in Fujairah, UAE, bringing with them invaluable international experience after testing their skills against some of the world’s best young karate athletes.

Chinedu delivered an impressive opening performance, dominating his first bout with a commanding 8–0 victory. A standout moment in the match was his execution of two clean ippon head kicks, each earning three points, showcasing both precision and confidence on the international stage.

In his second fight, Chinedu narrowly lost 1–0 in a tightly contested encounter that could have gone either way. Despite the result, his technical ability and composure under pressure drew praise.

Chibuzo faced a tough opponent in his division and went down 4–0. However, the bout reflected strong tactical awareness and resilience against high-calibre international competition.

Competing at this level marks another important milestone in the twins’ karate journey. The exposure to global competition is expected to sharpen their preparation for upcoming national and international events as they continue representing Ermelo and South Africa with pride.

Their performances once again highlight how training at the Ermelo Karate Dojo continues to shape champions. Through disciplined preparation, technical refinement and consistent competition exposure, the dojo has steadily produced athletes capable of competing — and excelling — on both national and international stages.

Next on the calendar Chibuzo and Chinedu will compete at the Elite Nationals in Durban from 20–22 March 2026 — fighting not only for medals, but to maintain their places on the national team as they enter an entirely new age division. They will be joined by their dojo teammate Lesedi, who is set to compete at the same Elite event as he pushes for a return to the national — and potentially international — stage after taking a break from competition last year. In addition, several of the dojo’s junior athletes will compete at the Development Nationals in Gauteng on 27–28 February 2026, further showcasing the depth of talent being nurtured locally.

However, competing at this level comes at a significant financial cost. Travel, accommodation, entry fees and specialised equipment place considerable pressure on families, with the bulk of expenses falling squarely on parents. Development athletes are also required to pay for their provincial attire due to very limited governmental funding available to support grassroots karate.

Ermelo Karate Academy is therefore appealing to the local community and businesses for support. Anyone willing to contribute financially toward the careers of these dedicated young athletes — or anyone interested in joining karate — can contact Sensei Eugene on 072 361 6680.
