The Department of Basic Education has issued a warning following the emergence of a dangerous trend dubbed as “chuffing”, after videos circulated on social media showing pupils inhaling powder from a fire extinguisher. Authorities say the practice poses severe health risks and should be treated as a serious safety concern.

According to officials, inhaling fire extinguisher contents can lead to serious health complications, including respiratory distress, pneumonia, seizures, brain damage and even death. The department emphasised that schools must remain safe environments and urged educators to act swiftly when such behaviour is identified.
Parents and guardians are encouraged to speak openly with their children about the dangers of substance abuse and harmful online trends. Schools have also been urged to strengthen awareness campaigns and reinforce safety protocols to help prevent similar incidents.
