Mpumalanga police arrested a total of 1,348 suspects during the Easter weekend, with 199 individuals apprehended for alleged drunk driving. The arrests formed part of Operation Paseka, a province-wide initiative aimed at reducing crime and road fatalities during the busy holiday period.
According to police, operations included roadblocks, stop-and-searches, and patrols across national, regional, and municipal routes. Law enforcement agencies also targeted the illegal sale of alcohol, resulting in 209 suspects being arrested for operating liquor outlets without valid licences. Authorities highlighted that such establishments often contribute to contact crimes such as murder, assault, and rape.
Efforts to curb violent crime and the circulation of illegal weapons also yielded results, with police recovering 11 shotguns, three rifles, and approximately 88 rounds of ammunition. A further 22 dangerous weapons, including knives, were confiscated. Arrests linked to serious offences included 17 for murder, 11 for attempted murder, 29 for rape, 167 for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, 68 for dealing in drugs, 82 for possession of drugs, and 10 for armed robbery.
Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, credited the success of Operation Paseka to the collaboration between SAPS and other law enforcement agencies. He also thanked residents and visitors who complied with the law, emphasising that continued cooperation is key to ensuring safer communities.
