Two traffic officials from the Lekwa Municipality Traffic Department in Mpumalanga have been arrested following a corruption investigation led by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks). The arrests, carried out on 16 April 2026 in Standerton, stem from allegations that motorists were pressured into paying bribes after committing traffic violations.

According to the Hawks, the investigation began after multiple complaints from members of the public.

During an undercover operation, a police official was stopped by two traffic officers for speeding and driving without a valid licence. It is alleged that the officials initially demanded R500 but eventually accepted R300, allowing the driver to leave without issuing a fine. Further investigation led to the identification and arrest of Superintendent Mndeni Danisa (38) and traffic officer Thulisile Dumakude (47).

The pair appeared before the Standerton Magistrate's Court, where they were each granted bail of R2 000. The case has been postponed to 05 June 2026 as investigations continue.
