President Cyril Ramaphosa will officially launch the rollout of Lenacapavir, a new long-acting HIV prevention injection, during a national event in Secunda on Friday, 5 June 2026.
The launch marks a significant milestone in South Africa’s efforts to reduce new HIV infections and strengthen HIV prevention programmes.
Lenacapavir is a long-acting injectable medication used for HIV prevention and is administered only twice a year.
The launch follows the arrival of South Africa’s first shipment of Lenacapavir in April 2026, when the Department of Health confirmed that 37,920 doses had been received for distribution across the country.
President Ramaphosa will be joined by Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, Mpumalanga Premier Mandla Ndlovu, provincial health MECs, leaders from the South African National AIDS Council (SANAC), development partners and donors, including the Global Fund.
The rollout forms part of South Africa’s broader strategy to expand HIV prevention options and reduce the number of new infections, particularly among vulnerable and high-risk groups.
