The South African Police Service (SAPS) is urging residents of Mpumalanga and the Free State to be on high alert following a rise in Facebook-related scams, including bogus job advertisements and marketplace traps.
Scammers are targeting locals through fake SAPS recruitment posts, like the one recently flagged (see image), which falsely claim to offer roles in crime investigation and forensics. These posts are designed to harvest personal data or scam hopeful applicants out of money.
Additionally, multiple Facebook Marketplace incidents have been reported where victims were lured with seemingly unbeatable deals. Criminals list items at heavily discounted prices, convincing buyers to meet at isolated locations. Upon arrival, victims are robbed—some even kidnapped and held for ransom.
Community Safety Tips When Buying on Facebook Marketplace:
- Investigate the seller: Check account age, reviews, and activity history.
- Be cautious of pricing: If it's significantly cheaper than retail, it may be a trap.
- Meet in public spaces: Preferably during the day and never go alone.
