The South African Weather Service has issued a Level 2 impact-based warning for severe thunderstorms, valid from 13:00 to 22:59 on Thursday, 8 January. The warning applies to large parts of Mpumalanga and surrounding regions, including areas such as Govan Mbeki, Lekwa, Msukaligwa, Mbombela, eMakhazeni, Albert Luthuli and Steve Tshwete, among others.

According to the forecast, the storms may bring heavy downpours leading to localised flooding, large amounts of small hail, and excessive lightning, with possible damage to infrastructure, vehicles, property and livestock. Residents are advised to stay indoors where possible, avoid travelling on flooded roads, and keep clear of rivers, low-lying areas and metal objects during the storms.
