A 24-year-old suspect is expected to appear in the Ermelo Magistrate’s Court on 16 April 2026, facing charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition following an incident in Breyten.

According to police, officers responded to a tip-off regarding a gunshot at Wittekrans Farm. Upon arrival, they found the suspect in possession of a Musgrave self-loading rifle, along with one live round and one spent cartridge. The suspect was unable to provide proof of lawful ownership and was arrested at the scene.

Further investigation revealed that the firearm’s registered owner had passed away in 2020. Police investigations are ongoing, and members of the public are urged to report cases where firearm owners have died, in accordance with the Firearms Control Act.
