Police in Mpumalanga arrested 1,175 suspects during Operation Shanela 2, conducted across the province between 17 and 19 April 2026. The operation led to the recovery of 28 unlicensed firearms and 58 rounds of ammunition, as law enforcement intensified efforts to combat crime.

According to the South African Police Service, 146 suspects were arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol, while 59 wanted suspects were traced and apprehended by detectives. A further 135 individuals were arrested for illegal liquor trading, which authorities say contributes significantly to violent crimes such as murder, assault, and rape. Police also confiscated counterfeit goods valued at approximately R283,000 and recovered 24 vehicles suspected to be stolen or hijacked during roadblocks and intelligence-driven operations.

Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, commended officers and law enforcement partners for their continued efforts, highlighting the importance of removing illegal firearms from circulation. The recovered weapons will undergo ballistic testing to determine if they were used in serious crimes.

Arrested suspects are expected to appear in various magistrates’ courts across Mpumalanga from Monday, 20 April 2026, while others were released after paying admission of guilt fines.
