Unsafe makeshift pothole repairs in Camden Avenue, Ermelo, have raised serious safety concerns after two individuals allegedly attempted to fill potholes with sand and placed building rubble in the road to control traffic in exchange for money. The situation reportedly posed a risk to motorists, with the individuals also suspected to be under the influence of substances. Police were called to the scene and removed the individuals.

According to a statement issued by Freedom Front Plus councillor Shobie Arnoldi, the incident highlights ongoing service delivery challenges within the Msukaligwa Local Municipality. Camden Avenue, which serves as a key link between N17 and Morgenzon, is reportedly deteriorating due to a lack of maintenance and heavy truck usage.

The VF Plus further stated that previous calls for stricter enforcement against trucks deviating from designated routes have not been acted upon, and a council motion addressing the issue was rejected. The party says it will continue to hold the municipality accountable, while urging residents to prioritise infrastructure maintenance and public safety ahead of the upcoming municipal elections.
