With the first April long weekend now passed, attention turns to the upcoming Workers’ Day on Friday, 1 May 2026, where increased travel and social activity are expected across Mpumalanga.
The Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison (DCSSL) warns that pedestrians remain highly vulnerable, with 55 deaths recorded during the last festive season and seven over Easter 2025. High-risk routes include major roads such as the N4, N12, and R40, particularly near taverns, taxi ranks, and informal settlements.
Law enforcement visibility will be increased, alongside awareness campaigns. Motorists are urged to slow down and stay alert for pedestrians, while pedestrians are advised to avoid walking while intoxicated, wear visible clothing at night, and cross safely.
MEC Jackie Macie has called for caution, warning that many road crashes during long weekends are preventable.
