Two arrested after police seize dagga worth R50 000 near Ermelo

Two foreign nationals were arrested after police seized dagga with an estimated street value of R50 000 during a Tactical Intelligence Operation on the R65 Amsterdam Road near Ermelo.

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the operation took place on Monday, 22 June, after Ermelo Crime Intelligence received information from an informant regarding the transportation of drugs.

The intelligence was shared with operational teams, including the Mpumalanga Provincial Highway Patrol, the Gert Sibande District Task Team, and the Ermelo K9 Unit, who intercepted a Toyota Hilux with Gauteng registration plates.

During a search of the vehicle, police discovered four bags containing dagga. The two occupants, aged 24 and 27, were arrested on charges of dealing in and possession of dagga.

Police also seized the Toyota Hilux, valued at approximately R250 000. Authorities confirmed that the vehicle is not registered in either suspect's name and investigations are underway to determine whether it may have been stolen.

The suspects are expected to appear in the Ermelo Magistrate's Court soon.
