The Mpumalanga Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport, together with the Msukaligwa Local Municipality (MLM), government departments and various stakeholders, commemorated Nelson Mandela Day through a series of community service initiatives in Ermelo on Friday, July 17.
Led by MEC Thulasizwe Thomo and Msukaligwa Executive Mayor Alderwoman M.P. Nkosi, the programme included the refurbishment of the Sibanesihle Stimulation Centre in Wesselton, a maintenance campaign at the Ermelo Long Distance Taxi Rank, the donation of blankets, and the handover of operating licences to qualifying driver beneficiaries.
As part of its contribution, the Msukaligwa Local Municipality donated 54 blankets and a new kitchen unit to the Sibanesihle Stimulation Centre. The municipality also provided road maintenance tools to assist with pothole repairs at the taxi rank as part of efforts to improve public infrastructure.
According to the municipality, the initiatives reflected government's commitment to restoring dignity, improving public spaces and supporting vulnerable members of the community through practical service.
The municipality added that International Nelson Mandela Day serves as a reminder that lasting change is achieved through service, compassion and collaboration, with partnerships across government continuing to honour Madiba's legacy by making a meaningful difference in local communities.
