The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Mpumalanga has instituted disciplinary proceedings against a police officer who was filmed allegedly assaulting a female community member at a police station.
Provincial police management said it had noted the video circulating on social media with concern and dismay. The officer seen in the footage has since been identified.
According to SAPS, the alleged conduct is unacceptable, unlawful and contrary to the organisation’s code of conduct. Police officers are expected to protect members of the public, uphold the law and perform their duties with integrity and professionalism.
The woman involved has been urged to open a criminal case so that the allegations can be formally investigated. SAPS said it remained committed to combating gender-based violence and femicide and assured the public that the law would take its course without fear or favour.
