Lieutenant General Nkakoane Aphania Modise has been appointed as the new Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Mpumalanga.
She was officially introduced by Acting National Commissioner Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane at the Bethal Police Station on Friday, 31 July. Mpumalanga Premier Mandla Ndlovu and MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison Jackie Macie attended the event.
Modise brings more than 35 years of policing experience, having joined the SAPS in 1989. She previously served as station commander at Senekal and Odendaalsrus before holding senior leadership positions in the Free State.

She was promoted to brigadier in 2012 and major general in 2016. In 2020, she was appointed Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Crime Detection in the Free State. She holds a National Diploma in Policing and a Bachelor of Arts in Public Administration.
MEC Macie welcomed the appointment and said Modise’s experience in crime detection, operations and policing would benefit Mpumalanga as the province confronts gun violence, illegal mining and organised crime.
She succeeds Major General Dr Zeph Mkhwanazi, who retired from the SAPS with effect from 1 August after leading policing efforts in Mpumalanga for just over two years.
Mkhwanazi thanked SAPS members, community policing forums, government departments, businesses, law-enforcement agencies and residents for supporting crime-fighting initiatives during his tenure.
“I am pleased to hand over the baton to capable hands,” Mkhwanazi said, encouraging stakeholders and residents to extend the same support to the newly appointed Provincial Commissioner.
