More than 1 300 suspects were arrested across Mpumalanga during Operation Shanela II, conducted from 17 to 20 September.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the multidisciplinary operation included the tracing of wanted suspects, stop-and-search operations, raids at illegal liquor outlets, vehicle checkpoints and roadblocks.
Among those arrested were 25 suspects linked to murder cases, 13 for attempted murder, 25 for rape, 177 for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and 15 for aggravated robbery.
Police also arrested 85 suspects for possession of drugs, 63 for illicit mining and 156 undocumented migrants.
Eight suspects were arrested for the illegal possession of firearms, while five were arrested for the illegal possession of ammunition.
Detectives also traced and arrested 118 wanted suspects, while 20 unlicensed liquor premises were closed and fines issued.
During the operations, law enforcement officers confiscated 21 firearms, 135 rounds of ammunition, 60.05kg of dagga, 36g of crack cocaine, 1 024g of crystal methamphetamine, 180.65g of nyaope and 3 310 litres of alcoholic beverages.
A further 6 504 counterfeit goods, 125kg of precious metals, 15kg of copper and copper cables, 1 399 tobacco products and 19 vehicles were confiscated.
SAPS said contraband valued at approximately R2.27 million was also recovered.
Mpumalanga Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Apaphia Modise commended the multidisciplinary teams involved and said high-density and intelligence-driven operations would continue in collaboration with other law enforcement agencies and community structures.
