Rumours of a possible shutdown in Wesselton, Ermelo, began circulating on social media on Tuesday, 6 October, warning residents of planned protest action the following day.

Although the anticipated large-scale shutdown never materialised, isolated incidents caused disruptions during the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Between approximately 06:00 and 07:00, burning tyres were reportedly used to block a road in Wesselton, temporarily disrupting traffic. Police responded promptly, while most of Ermelo remained largely unaffected.

Despite the limited disruption, the situation raised safety concerns among residents. One parent told iNews that her child had to remain at home instead of attending school due to the roadblock and fears for the child's safety.

Questions have also been raised over the timing of the disruption, with some questioning why it occurred just a day after schools reopened for the new term.

Meanwhile, a small group reportedly gathered near Mpumalanga Stadium, with police also intervening near Mandela Drive.

The planned march was reportedly unauthorised, while an individual was arrested in connection with a voice note allegedly promoting the shutdown.

Although no widespread protest action took place, the incident highlighted how even isolated disruptions can affect residents and their daily routines.

Residents are encouraged to verify information before sharing messages about planned protests or road closures.
