Former Hoërskool Ermelo athlete Tyrone Berning secured two first-place finishes at the ASWD Talent ID and SWDMA Championships, held at Rosemoor Athletics Track in George on 2 and 3 October.
Representing Ermelo Athletic Club, Berning competed in the Under-23 category, claiming victory in both the 400m hurdles and high jump events.
He completed the 400m hurdles in 55.28 seconds and cleared 1.90 metres in the high jump, with both performances recorded as season's bests.
Berning has a strong sporting background dating back to his school years at Hoërskool Ermelo, where he achieved several notable athletics results. In 2020, he was ranked first nationally in the U14 high jump and 300m hurdles categories.
His involvement in school sport extended beyond competing, having also served as Hoërskool Ermelo's Sports Chairperson in 2024.
Now representing Ermelo Athletic Club, Berning continues to build on his school athletics achievements, with his latest double victory adding to an established sporting record.
