Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Jackie Macie, has urged motorists to avoid drinking and driving as increased traffic volumes are expected across the province this weekend.
The warning comes ahead of the Soweto Derby between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, which is expected to draw football supporters travelling to Johannesburg. Political campaigning ahead of the 4 November 2026 Local Government Elections and month-end social gatherings are also expected to contribute to increased traffic.
Macie called on motorists transporting football and political party supporters to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and to obey traffic regulations.
He also encouraged drivers to rest after every two hours or 200 kilometres of travelling.
"Every driver on the road this weekend must obey the rules and not drive recklessly," Macie said.
He warned that law enforcement officers would adopt a zero-tolerance approach to reckless driving as October Transport Month concludes.
According to the department, traffic officers and emergency personnel will be on high alert, with increased visibility along major routes including the N4, N2, N3, N11, N17, R573, R40, R23 and R568.
Motorists have also been advised to remain cautious of changing weather conditions and ongoing roadworks.
