Umsebe Primary School in Wesselton marked Mandela Day in a meaningful way on 29 July by turning the spirit of service inward as learners and volunteer parents joined hands to give back to their school.

Instead of a typical school day, learners, teachers and parents rolled up their sleeves and got to work — sweeping classrooms, scrubbing windows, painting over scuffed walls, and fixing what they could. It was a day of hands-on effort, filled with purpose and determination. Their goal wasn’t just to tidy up, but to take ownership of their space — a small act of service that reflected the true meaning of Mandela Day.

Township schools like Umsebe Primary often face significant challenges when it comes to infrastructure — from overcrowded classrooms and broken windows to inadequate sanitation and deteriorating facilities. These issues are commonly rooted in limited funding and stretched resources. However, what makes Umsebe stand out is the school community’s determination not to wait for external help. Instead, they’ve taken it upon themselves to create a better environment with what they have.

Although the event took place after the official Mandela Day on 18 July, the school’s initiative embodies the true essence of the day — that service to one’s community should not be limited to a single date, but should be embraced whenever the opportunity arises. Umsebe Primary’s efforts serve as a reminder that meaningful change begins with those willing to act, regardless of circumstance.
