Last Friday, 9 February 2024, excitement filled the air at Ermelo Christian School as the Msukaligwa Fire Department paid a special visit. Gathered on the grass, the children eagerly awaited the interactive session that awaited them.
The firefighters didn't just deliver a standard presentation; they actively engaged with the students, making the learning experience both informative and memorable. Demonstrating what to do in case of a fire, they provided valuable insights into safety protocols and behaviors.
Additionally, they took the time to explain their equipment, detailing its purpose and significance. The firefighters illuminated each item's vital role in their life-saving efforts, from the axe used for opening doors to specialised tools for rescuing trapped individuals.
Moreover, the firefighters underscored the importance of protective gear, such as face masks equipped with oxygen tanks, ensuring the children understood the necessity of safety measures. They generously shared their emergency contact number as part of their commitment to community safety, empowering the students to seek assistance.
The highlight of the visit was undoubtedly the demonstration of readiness. The firefighters showcased their ability to respond swiftly to emergencies, aiming to be fully prepared within three minutes of an alarm. One firefighter’s remarkable feat of gearing up and boarding the truck in just 1 minute and 50 seconds left the children in awe, emphasising the dedication and skill required for their crucial role.
The day concluded with laughter and smiles as the children enjoyed witnessing the fire hose in action, some even getting sprayed with water.
