Last week, the Ermelo Athletic Club held the famous Hans Storm Night Run at the Body Strong Fitness Gym on Wednesday. Even though it rained heavily, with lightning threatening to postpone or cancel the event, many people still came to take part in the race.

The annual race, now a beloved tradition, is held in memory of Hans Storm, a former Ermelo High School pupil and talented long-distance runner who tragically passed away in a car accident in May 1982 during his term of service. Hans had organised the first-ever Night Race over 21.1 kilometres in Ermelo while still a student, and since 1982, the Ermelo Marathon Club has kept his legacy alive through this event.

The night race was open to the public and generously sponsored by Ermelo Toyota and Giant Beds, who provided drinks and refreshments to the athletes. Despite the unfavourable weather conditions, with heavy rain and lightning, the participants remained determined to run, showing enthusiasm and resilience. Fortunately, the weather cleared just in time, allowing the race to proceed as scheduled.

The Memorial Night run continues to stand as a symbol of community spirit and endurance and a lasting tribute to a promising young athlete whose legacy lives on through the race.
