Probe Launched After Alleged Assault by SAPS Member in Volksrust

An investigation has been launched following the circulation of a video on social media allegedly showing a police officer assaulting a member of the public at the Volksrust Police Station. The incident is reported to have taken place on 02 April 2026, prompting concern over police conduct in the province.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed that both an internal investigation and a criminal case have been initiated to fully examine the circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities have stressed that the matter is being treated with seriousness, and that all aspects will be thoroughly investigated.

In addition, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has been notified and is expected to conduct a parallel probe. This move forms part of efforts to ensure transparency and accountability in the handling of the case.

Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to professionalism, stating that any misconduct by members will be dealt with decisively. He added that maintaining public trust remains a top priority for the police service as investigations continue.
