Ermelo karate star Chinedu Okpugo has once again placed both his town, province, and South Africa on the international stage after claiming a gold medal at the 23rd UFAK Region South Karate Championships in Luanda, Angola. The talented athlete delivered a dominant performance in the final, defeating Namibia 7–0 to secure the top position in the Southern African sub-region for his age and weight division.

The young fighter from Ermelo Karate Academy has steadily built a reputation as one of South Africa’s rising karate talents. Over the past few years, Chinedu has represented Mpumalanga and South Africa at numerous major competitions, earning medals and recognition both nationally and internationally. Earlier this year, he competed at the Karate 1 Youth League in Harare, Zimbabwe, where he earned a silver medal against strong international competition. He also secured silver at the Karate South Africa Children, Cadets and Juniors National Championships held in Durban earlier this year. Chinedu officially received his Protea colours on 28 April 2026, further cementing his place among the country’s elite young karate athletes. He is also currently ranked 12th in the world in the Cadet Kumite Male -70kg division according to the World Karate Federation rankings.

His latest achievement in Angola follows months of intense preparation and selection processes. Chinedu was officially selected as part of the Karate South Africa team to represent the country at the regional championships held from 13 to 17 May 2026 in Luanda. His emphatic 7–0 victory over Namibia in the final not only earned him gold, but also confirmed his status as the number one athlete in the Southern African region for his division.

With the regional title now secured, Chinedu’s focus shifts to the African Continental Championships (UFAK) set to take place in Algeria in four months’ time. The achievement marks another major milestone in the young karateka’s growing career and highlights the continued rise of talent emerging from Ermelo Karate Academy onto the continental and international stage.
