After more than three decades of inspiring others through fitness, local fitness trainer, businesswoman and writer Mirna Bothma has achieved a lifelong dream with the launch of her first book, When Fitness Ignites the Soul.
The book is a collection of inspirational articles and reflections written over many years, capturing lessons learnt through fitness, personal growth, perseverance and everyday life. It highlights that fitness is about far more than physical appearance, focusing instead on its ability to transform lives, build confidence, create community and ignite something deeper within individuals.
Bothma’s writing journey began in 2014 when she started contributing weekly articles to the Ermelo Insight. What started as a simple effort to motivate others grew into a passion for storytelling and sharing life lessons. Her work explored challenges, victories, setbacks, relationships, health, purpose and the resilience of ordinary people.
“The book is not really about fitness,” said Bothma.
“It’s about people. It’s about courage, hope, second chances, perseverance and discovering that we are capable of far more than we think. Fitness simply became the vehicle through which many of those lessons were learnt.”
As owner of Mirna’s Aerobic Studio, she has spent years helping women of all ages improve their health and well-being. During this time, she witnessed stories of determination, transformation and friendship, many of which inspired the themes in her book.
The title, When Fitness Ignites the Soul, reflects her belief that movement can spark something meaningful within people. While fitness strengthens the body, it can also build character, boost confidence and inspire individuals to live more purposeful lives.
The book was officially launched on 16 May at Mirna’s Aerobic Studio, where family, friends, studio members and supporters gathered to celebrate the milestone. For Bothma, the launch marked both the culmination of years of writing and a tribute to those who supported her journey.
She expressed gratitude to her husband Schalk, her children, her sister and editor Delien, her instructors Jacqueline and Michelle, Adele Smit, former editor of Ermelo Insight, as well as her studio members and readers.
“Dreams take time. This book is proof that if you keep showing up, keep believing and keep doing the work, wonderful things can happen.” Said Bothma
