More than 1 000 suspects were arrested across Mpumalanga during the latest Operation Shanela II, which was conducted between 18 and 21 June 2026. The operation, led by the South African Police Service (SAPS) alongside various law enforcement agencies and stakeholders, focused on combating crime and enhancing public safety throughout the province.
According to SAPS, the operation included search operations, roadblocks, patrols, compliance inspections and the tracing of wanted suspects. Arrests were made for a range of offences, including liquor and drug-related crimes, violent crimes, illegal migration, illicit mining, and offences involving firearms and ammunition.

Police also recovered and confiscated a variety of items linked to criminal activities, including firearms, ammunition, liquor, drugs, contraband goods, counterfeit products, precious metals and vehicles.
Acting Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General Dr Zeph Mkhwanazi, commended members and stakeholders involved in the operation for their continued efforts in maintaining law and order across the province.
