Four occupants of the sedan – the driver and three passengers – were declared dead at the scene. A fifth passenger, who was taken to Standerton Provincial Hospital with serious injuries, later succumbed, bringing the death toll to five.

Preliminary reports indicate that dangerous overtaking may have contributed, although the exact cause of the crash remains under investigation.

MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison Jackie Macie expressed condolences to the bereaved families, describing the growing number of fatal crashes on the R23 as a major concern.

"The number of fatal crashes on the R23 is a huge concern to the province. This stretch of road is becoming another death trap, and it means we must do more to enforce the law on the R23 and other problematic routes. Motorists must also play their part by driving safely and obeying the rules of the road," said MEC Macie.

The MEC also urged law enforcement agencies to continue taking decisive action against reckless driving, while the department called on all motorists to obey traffic regulations and exercise extreme caution, particularly on the R23.
