A 16-year-old teenager has been arrested in Malmesbury, Western Cape, following an investigation involving South African and international law enforcement agencies into alleged child sexual abuse material and violent online exploitation networks.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the teenager was arrested on Monday, 17 August 2026, for alleged offences relating to accessing, possessing, facilitating and downloading child sexual abuse material. The operation followed intelligence received by SAPS’ National Serial and Electronic Crime Investigations (SECI) Team from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the United States Embassy and the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC).

SAPS said the intelligence indicated that a person suspected of being linked to violent online networks commonly referred to as “764” was believed to be located in South Africa. Police described these networks as international online extremist networks associated with child exploitation, whose members reportedly target, blackmail and coerce minors into sexual abuse and other harmful criminal activities.
Following an extensive investigation, the National SECI Team traced the teenager to an address in Malmesbury, where SAPS said he was arrested “in the act”. The operation was supported by the SAPS Head Office Occult Unit, Paarl Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit, Paarl K9 Unit and the Western Cape Crime Scene Investigation Unit, along with agents from the FBI and Homeland Security Investigations attached to the US Embassy.
A preliminary examination of electronic devices seized during the operation allegedly uncovered explicit images and videos depicting child sexual abuse and animal mutilation. SAPS said the devices will now undergo comprehensive forensic analysis to determine the full extent of the alleged offences, while a number of child victims have already been identified.
Police are also investigating the possibility of additional offences relating to fraud and money laundering. The teenager was expected to appear in the Malmesbury Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 18 August 2026.
The investigation remains ongoing, and SAPS has indicated that further offences may be identified as the forensic examination of the seized devices continues.
