A 44-year-old police sergeant attached to the Secunda Flying Squad was arrested on Friday morning, 4 September, in connection with the alleged hijacking of a diesel truck in Bethal.
According to the South African Police Service, the truck was hijacked on 2 May 2026. The case was subsequently assigned to the Mpumalanga Provincial Organised Crime Investigation Unit, whose investigation led to the arrest of four suspects in July.
Further investigations allegedly linked the police sergeant to the planning of the hijacking. A warrant was issued for his arrest and executed by members of the Organised Crime Investigation Unit.
The sergeant remains in custody and is expected to appear before the Bethal Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 7 September, on a charge of truck hijacking.
Mpumalanga Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Apaphia Modise commended the investigating team and said the arrest demonstrated that no one was above the law.
“The arrest of one of our own members is clear proof that we act without fear or favour,” Modise said.
She added that criminality within the SAPS would not be tolerated and that members who betrayed the badge would face decisive action.
