South Africans still using green ID books will need to switch to Smart ID cards before 31 March 2028, when the traditional documents are set to become invalid.

Minister of Home Affairs Dr Leon Schreiber announced that the department will stop producing green ID books on 31 March 2027, giving existing holders another 12 months to make the transition.

Approximately 14.7 million South Africans and permanent residents still rely on green ID books.

The move forms part of government's efforts to modernise identification services and reduce identity fraud.

Home Affairs is expanding Smart ID services through participating bank branches to make applications more accessible.

Residents are encouraged to replace their green ID books well ahead of the deadline to avoid delays.
