A former SAPS constable has appeared in the Standerton Magistrate’s Court on charges of fraud and theft after allegedly using a police fleet card for personal transactions amounting to approximately R8 000.

Bafo Siyabonga Cindi (35) was arrested by the Hawks on Thursday, 22 October 2026, at Ermelo Correctional Centre, where he is being held pending trial in separate stock theft cases registered in Perdekop and Greylingstad.

According to the Hawks, Cindi allegedly misused a SAPS FNB Fleet Card while serving as an investigating officer at the Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit in Standerton.

The allegations were reported in 2024, prompting an investigation by the Hawks’ Secunda Serious Corruption Investigation unit.

Cindi, who was dismissed from SAPS in May 2026, had previously been denied bail in the separate stock theft cases.

He appeared in the Standerton Magistrate’s Court on 22 October, where the fraud and theft matter was postponed to 5 November 2026 to allow him to secure legal representation.

Acting Hawks Provincial Head Brigadier Bruce Davenport reiterated the directorate’s commitment to fighting corruption within law enforcement.

“No uniform, badge or rank places anyone above the law,” Davenport said.

The allegations against Cindi have not yet been proven in court.
