The N17 and R33 T-junction towards Chrissiesmeer and Lothair has become a focal point for road safety concerns, with multiple accidents reported over the past months. This situation highlights the urgent need for improved road indications and safety measures.

On 27 April 2024, a severe accident involving an MP200 bakkie occurred as it traveled on the R33 towards the N17 T-junction. The vehicle went over the safety barricade and down the road embankment, resulting in severe injuries to the passengers.

A few weeks later, on Friday, 14 June 2024, another serious accident involving a woman and her baby drew significant attention. Their vehicle went straight off the same T-junction, causing moderate to serious injuries. Heavy mist significantly reduced visibility that day, and the lack of clear warning signs or rumble strips contributed to the driver’s inability to navigate the turn safely.

Just days later, on Wednesday, 19 June 2024, another similar accident occurred when a Toyota bakkie driven by an elderly man also went off the road at this notorious T-junction, resulting in serious injuries. In all these incidents, emergency services responded swiftly, underscoring the repeated nature of these events.

Local farmers and residents from Ermelo and the surrounding areas are increasingly worried about the frequent accidents at this N17 and R33 T-junction. Winter brings heavy mist, particularly in the mornings, significantly impacting visibility and increasing the risk of accidents.

Residents are urging local authorities to take immediate steps to enhance the safety of the N17. Recommendations include installing additional road warning signs, improving lighting, reinforcing barriers, and adding rumble strips on the R33 towards this T-junction to better guide drivers through the area, especially during adverse weather conditions.

Over the past month, the spike in accidents at this specific T-junction has highlighted a critical need for improved road safety measures. Similar incidents on this road have also resulted in fatalities, emphasising the urgency for action. The community’s rising concerns call for immediate attention from the Msukaligwa Local Municipality to address these issues promptly, ensuring the safety of all road users and preventing further accidents.

iNews has sent an enquiry to the Msukaligwa Local Municipality to find out what actions will be taken to address this situation.
