Seven people have tragically lost their lives following a collision between a sedan and a light delivery vehicle (LDV) on the N12 between Ogies and Emalahleni on Monday morning, 8 December 2025.

According to the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, preliminary investigations indicated that the crash occurred when one of the vehicles apparently lost control, and crossed into oncoming traffic before colliding with the other vehicle. Investigators believe that excessive speed may have contributed to the loss of control.

All seven occupants involved in the crash died at the scene. Five of the deceased were travelling in the sedan — two females and three males — while the remaining two victims, both male, were in the LDV. No survivors were reported.

A joint investigation by the South African Police Service, the Road Traffic Management Corporation, and the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison is underway. Authorities say reckless or negligent driving has not been ruled out.

Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Jackie Macie, called on motorists to exercise heightened caution on the province’s roads.

“Let us all be cautious on the road to curb needless loss of life and injury. We should all endeavour to abide by the rules of the road at all times,” Macie said.

The department extended condolences to the affected families as the investigation continues.
