The National Department of Transport has announced that the rollout of the new AARTO (Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences) system has been postponed to 1 July 2026.

The system was originally set to begin on 1 December 2025, but after an internal assessment, government found that multiple municipalities were not yet ready for implementation.

The assessment highlighted two key challenges:

  • Training for law-enforcement officers and administrative staff has not been finalised.
  • Municipalities are still working on aligning their existing law-enforcement systems and securing the necessary funding.

According to the Department, the phased approach to implementation will still take place — just at later dates. A new proclamation outlining the revised rollout schedule will be published soon.

This means motorists will not see the AARTO system or its national traffic fine integration in December as previously communicated. The new official implementation date is 1 July 2026.

INews will continue to monitor updates and notify residents.
