Large pugnacious ants
(Anoplolepis custodiens)
The Large pugnacious ant is a robust reddish-brown ant with a head redder than the rest of the body and is native to Sub-Saharan Africa. It is one of a few species of common, abundant Anoplolepis ant species in southern Africa that are well known to people living in areas where these ants occur. Workers vary in size from 2-10 mm. Large pugnacious ants are aggressive, fast-moving ants. When sensing anything that can be perceived as a threat, workers will swarm and attack.
