The launch of the Innovation Hub follows after a team of teachers did years of research to ensure that the model implemented at Ligbron would work for their school's demographics. After four years of research and consultations with many other schools in South Africa with robotics hubs and funding from various stakeholders, the Innovation Hub is officially open.
The Innovation Hub will teach students the fundamentals of coding, planning and building a robotics project, and implementing their robotics code. Pierre van Wyngaard, the hub coordinator, gave an example that students would be able to 3D print components for a remote control car, build the car with all the necessary circuitry and code the car to be controlled from a laptop or mobile phone. The students would be able to do everything from start to finish at the Innovation Hub.
Madelein Snyman, the teacher at the Innovation Hub, showed to all the attendees the toys and gadgets like 3D printers and robotics kits they use to teach the students. Gerhard Prinsloo added that they aim to also run the Innovation Hub as a small business where they would produce corporate gifts companies can buy from them.
