School’s Out—But Safety is In: Holiday Tips for Families

As the winter school holidays begin, Ermelo families are reminded to prioritise children’s safety, both online and in public spaces. With children spending more unsupervised time on digital platforms and out with friends, the potential risks can increase if proper precautions aren't taken.

The Department of Government Communications has issued a set of safety guidelines to help caregivers and parents ensure their children remain protected during the holiday period. Monitoring children’s daily activities, particularly their time spent on the internet, is essential. Limiting access to unsafe websites and social media platforms can reduce exposure to potential online threats, including cyberbullying and exploitation.

Open communication is key. Children should be encouraged to speak up if they encounter strangers—online or offline—and made to understand that they must never keep such incidents secret. When families go out in public, it’s also helpful to plan a meeting point in case anyone gets separated.

In the unfortunate event that a child goes missing, immediate action is crucial. There is no need to wait 24 hours to file a report. Contact the South African Police Service at 08600 10111, or reach out to Missing Children SA at 072 647 7464. Reports can also be submitted online at https://missingchildren.org.za/report.

By staying vigilant and maintaining open dialogue, our community can help ensure this holiday season is both joyful and safe for every child in Ermelo.
