The South African Police Service (SAPS) has issued a stern reminder to the public: Possession of stolen goods is a criminal offence, and both thieves and those who knowingly buy such goods will face prosecution.

As part of the ongoing effort to curb crime and disrupt the illegal trade of stolen property, SAPS is calling on all South Africans to assist in identifying and reporting suspicious activities—especially involving second-hand goods dealers and recyclers.

Members of the public are urged to take the following actions to support law enforcement:

  • Blow the whistle on stolen goods by reporting them to SAPS Crime Stop at 08600 10111.
  • Inform authorities about any dealers or recyclers suspected of trading in illegal second-hand goods.
  • Report copper cable theft, a growing problem that severely impacts public infrastructure and services.
  • Provide tip-offs on illegal activities or the whereabouts of criminals involved in the stolen goods network.

According to SAPS, community vigilance plays a crucial role in identifying and stopping these crimes before they spread further. The public is reminded that ignorance is not a defense—knowingly buying or holding stolen goods is a prosecutable offence under South African law.
