The Erries bids farewell to a remarkable educator, Ms Elsa Matthee, who has left an everlasting mark on Ermelo High School (EHS). Under the leadership of principal Mr Spiere van Rensburg, Elsa began her career at the school joining the staff in 1987, where her influence extended far beyond the classroom.

Ms Matthee involvement ranged from an—athletics coach, tennis enthusiast, drum puppet mentor, and active member of the social and refreshment committees. Her innovative spirit was evident in 1998 when she founded the subject of Tourism at EHS. She also played a key role in the transition of Home Economics to Hotel Management in 1992, and later to Hospitality Studies in 2002, nurturing future chefs and hospitality professionals.

In 2007, she embraced a new challenge as the boarding house mother for Adriani Girls’ Hostel, guiding students with care and dedication until it transformed into Adriani Day Home in 2010(also know as Dorp Huis).

Ms Matthee has added value to the Erries in many areas. She is a beloved teacher who, with her spontaneous manner, resonates with learners in a special way. She is married to Mr Hennie Matthee, deputy principal of Laerskool JJ van der Merwe. Their two children, George and Elsemari, were also born and raised in Ermelo and both completed their schooling at the Erries. Mr and Ms Matthee plan to move to Marloth Park and enjoy a peaceful retirement.

She describes her passion as follows: “And if those children don’t respond, you may not be able to teach them yet, but you can love them. And if you love them today, you can teach them tomorrow.”- Jeffrey R Holland

With a heavy heart the Erries say goodbye to Ms Matthee. She will always remember her for her willingness to step in at all times, whether it be speeches, functions or any other area. May the future hold much prosperity for you and your family.
