In light of a surge in fraudulent activities involving individuals impersonating South African Police Service (SAPS) officers, the Ermelo SAPS is urging all residents to save the following official contact numbers to ensure direct and secure communication:

  • 082 462 3845
  • 017 819 1659

Do not rely on Google or other online sources for SAPS contact information, as scammers often exploit outdated or incorrect listings to deceive the public.

Multiple incidents across Mpumalanga in 2025 have underscored the tactics used by fraudsters to exploit unsuspecting individuals.

In February 2025, residents in Secunda reported receiving messages claiming that criminal cases had been opened against them, complete with fake case numbers and contact details. These messages often demanded payment to avoid arrest. The scammers used various phone numbers, making it challenging for police to track them.

In April 2025, the SAPS warned the public about fraudulent letters bearing the SAPS logo being circulated via WhatsApp. These letters falsely claimed to originate from the SAPS and were used to deceive recipients into sharing personal details under false pretenses.

Also in early 2025, the Hawks in Mpumalanga cautioned residents about fraudulent job advertisements claiming to offer employment opportunities within the SAPS. Scammers contacted individuals, promising them positions in exchange for financial compensation.

These incidents highlight the importance of having direct access to verified SAPS contact numbers

The SAPS emphasizes that they do not communicate through unofficial channels for sensitive matters.

Official communication methods include:

  • Direct Phone Calls: From verified SAPS numbers.
  • In-Person Visits: By uniformed officers with proper identification.
  • Official Correspondence: Through formal letters with SAPS letterheads.

Residents are encouraged to:

  • Save the Official Numbers: 082 462 3845 and 017 819 1659.
  • Report Suspicious Activity: Any dubious messages or calls should be reported to the nearest police station.
  • Educate Others: Inform family and friends about these scams and the importance of using official contact channels.

By staying vigilant and informed, the community can work together to prevent fraud and ensure safety for all.
