Tension simmered outside the Msukaligwa Local Municipality Offices this morning as residents gathered to demand answers about employment opportunities tied to nearby South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) projects. The municipal offices were completely closed to the public, and officials did not disclose when normal access would resume.
According to resources and insights from people in the crowd, the protesters hoped to engage the municipality’s local economic development (LED) manager amid growing allegations that jobs intended for the wider community are instead being channelled to local councillors.
At around 09:00 municipal staff finally permitted community representatives to enter the premises to meet with the relevant officials.
