The South African Police Service (SAPS) is calling on residents to remain alert and take responsibility in preventing crime, highlighting both vehicle theft prevention and the dangers of illegal firearms. The warnings form part of ongoing awareness campaigns aimed at reducing opportunistic crime and improving public safety.

Vehicle theft prevention: “Boot it or lose it”

Motorists are reminded to secure their vehicles at all times, ensuring that doors and windows are properly locked when parking. SAPS further advises that valuables such as laptops, cameras and other personal items should not be left in plain sight, as this makes vehicles easy targets for criminals.

Instead, these items should be stored out of view, preferably in the boot, reducing the risk of smash-and-grab incidents and theft.

Firearm safety: Do not support illegal weapons

SAPS has also cautioned against the purchase of illegal or stolen firearms, warning that doing so contributes directly to criminal networks. Authorities stress that firearm owners must act responsibly and within the law.

It is a criminal offence to use a firearm unlawfully, lose it through negligence, point it at another person, or lend it to others. Responsible ownership remains a key factor in improving community safety.
