The Gert Sibande District Municipality has issued an urgent security alert after discovering that some municipal employees’ email addresses were being used to send phishing messages.
The municipality warned that these emails may appear to be follow-ups or contain wording designed to create a sense of importance or urgency such as “FOLLOW UP”, “IMPORTANT” or “URGENT”. Recipients were advised to delete suspicious messages immediately without opening any links or attachments, as doing so could compromise their computers and expose sensitive information.
They were also urged not to provide personal details or login information in response to suspicious emails. Municipal employees who receive such messages should report them to the municipality’s ICT Unit for further investigation.
