Beyond competing, some of the students also pursued their accreditation as provincial judges alongside their fellow student, Lesedi Twala. Their efforts resulted in remarkable achievements:
Judging Qualifications:
- Chibuzo Okpugo – Provincial Kata B qualification
- Chinedu Okpugo – Provincial Kata B and Kumite B qualifications
- Lesedi Twala – Provincial Kata B qualification
Chinedu Okpugo stands out as the youngest judge in Mpumalanga to obtain both Kata and Kumite certifications, highlighting his dedication and skill.

These accomplishments follow last year’s success when three Ermelo Karate Academy students represented South Africa at the Commonwealth Karate Championships in Durban (28 November - 1 December). Notably, Chibuzo Okpugo placed 5th in his Kumite category.
Despite their intensive training and competition schedules, the students also prepared for their year-end gradings. Chibuzo and Chinedu advanced to Brown 1, the final stage before earning a black belt, while Lesedi Twala attained his Shodan (1st Dan Black Belt), making him the 10th black belt from the academy. Impressively, at just 15 years old, Lesedi achieved this milestone a year earlier than his own Sensei.

Chinedu and Chibuzo will compete at the Karate South Africa National Championships on 8 March 2025, in Durban. A top-four placement will qualify them to represent South Africa at the United Federation of African Karate’s Region South Championship end of May 2025. With continued dedication and outstanding performances, Ermelo Karate Academy is making its mark on the provincial, national, and international karate scene.
