A group of 14 top-performing Liggie athletes competed in the Gert Sibande Secondary District Athletics Championships at the Secunda Stadium on Saturday, 1st March 2025, delivering an outstanding performance that saw them bring home a total of 11 gold, 6 silver, and 3 bronze medals.
Both track and field athletes delivered impressive results, with the field athletes securing six medals. Keenen Janse van Rensburg earned a gold medal in discus and a silver medal in shot put.
However, it was the track athletes who stole the show, winning multiple gold medals. The following Liggies dominated their respective races:
- Amu Thanjekwayo
- Alzira Potgieter
- Sarah Bowers (who excelled with two golds in the 1,500m and 800m, plus a silver in the 400m)
- Kamogelo Khumalo
- Niyanda Malinga (who sprinted to victory in the 100m and 200m)
- Berrie Nel
- Luan Janse van Rensburg

Road to the SA Schools Championships
The next challenge for these athletes will be the MUSSA Championships, where the final Mpumalanga provincial team will be selected. Those who qualify will earn a spot to compete at the SA Schools Championships later this year.
