Operation Shanela II Delivers Major Results Across Mpumalanga

Operation Shanela II (an ongoing campaign to clamp down on crime nationally by the SAPS) has once again proven effective in the fight against crime across Mpumalanga, with significant results recorded between 25 and 28 September 2025.

Over the four-day operation, law enforcement executed 7 800 actions, including seven roadblocks, which led to 1 254 arrests for crimes ranging from contravention of the Immigration Act to rape.

Those arrested face charges related to:

  • Contravention of the Immigration Act
  • Illegal possession of firearms
  • Illegal dealing in liquor
  • Being undocumented foreign nationals
  • Drinking in public
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Possession of drugs
  • Assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH)
  • Rape

Police also confiscated:

  • Five firearms
  • 10 vehicles
  • 18.19 kg of drugs
  • R2 900 in cash

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, praised the collaborative effort of all law enforcement officers and partners.

“We remain committed to ensuring the safety and security of our communities. The success of Operation Shanela II demonstrates the impact of coordinated efforts, and we appreciate the invaluable support from our partner departments,” said Major General Mkhwanazi.

SAPS confirmed that crime-combatting operations will continue to be intensified across Mpumalanga as part of its mandate to uphold law and order.
