Four people have appeared in the Piet Retief Magistrate's Court on separate charges of allegedly dealing in dagga following police operations in the Mahamba policing precinct.
A 47-year-old woman, identified as Phelelisiwe Siphiwe Zwane, appeared in court after her arrest at the Mahamba Port of Entry on 22 June. According to police, border control officers stopped and searched a Mercedes-Benz travelling from Eswatini into South Africa at about 16:46 and allegedly found 12 rolls of dagga weighing about 29.9kg with an estimated street value of R180 000.
The foreign national was arrested on charges of dealing in dagga, while the vehicle was confiscated for further investigation. The case was postponed to 1 July 2026 and the accused remains in custody.

In a separate case, three suspects aged between 30 and 50 appeared in the Piet Retief Magistrate's Court after being arrested during a joint operation by the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and Mahamba SAPS.
Police said the suspects were stopped on the N2 at about 23:30 on 20 June while travelling in a white Volkswagen sedan. A search of the vehiclev allegedly led to the discovery of nine parcels of dagga wrapped in brown adhesive tape and concealed inside the car.
The seized dagga weighed approximately 16.25kg and has an estimated street value of more than R100 000. The suspects were charged with dealing in dagga, while the vehicle was also seized as part of the investigation.
Their case has been postponed to 8 July 2026 for further court proceedings.
SAPS said it remains committed to intensifying operations against drug trafficking and related crimes through targeted operations and border control interventions.
